Trouble Quitting Smoking Ten Ways To At Least Smoke Less

So you`ve tried to quit smoking but just cannot seem to do it? Then do the next best thing. Here are ten ways to smoke fewer cigarettes. After all, if you can cut down, the next time you try to stop completely, you will stand a better chance of succeeding.

  1. Switch to a different brand of cigarettes. For example, if you usually smoke a strong brand, switch to a lighter brand.
  2. Every time you decide to light up, delay having that cigarette for one minute. Time yourself. This puts you in control of your smoking.
  3. Change your routine as it relates to smoking. For example, if you habitually light up when you have a break at work, chew some gum or eat a snack you really enjoy, even if it`s junk food. Only after that, if you still have time, smoke a single cigarette.
  4. Never light up in the house, the office, the car, or even the garage. Go right outside when the urge to smoke strikes - even if it`s pouring rain or the middle of the night.
  5. If you smoke regular cigarettes, switch to menthol, and visa versa. This will help reprogram your subconscious with the idea that smoking is not pleasant.
  6. Don`t light up automatically. While you are addicted to nicotine, much of your smoking is because you`ve made a habit of smoking at a certain time, or in a certain place, or with certain people. By raising your awareness of smoking, you are making it less a habit.
  7. Save your butts in a covered can. Make a point of taking the lid off and inhaling several times daily. The more butts you can accumulate, the better. Even a hard core smoker will find the smell disgusting.
  8. Don`t carry around your cigarettes and lighter. Put them both in different places so it becomes an effort to retrieve them before smoking. If you are still smoking indoors, move your ashtray to a third location, so it becomes one more thing to get before you can have a cigarette.
  9. Throw away each cigarette a puff or two before you usually would. Every little bit helps.
  10. Don`t do anything else while you smoke. No TV, no reading, no working, no phone calls, etc. Just as a dieter is encouraged to concentrate on every bite they take, make yourself aware of every cigarette that you light up.

Follow these ten tips and you will cut down on the amount that you smoke. You will also be modifying the way you think about smoking, thereby increasing your odds of quitting at some point.
